Fantasy Movie League
Fantasy Movie League is a game based on the massively popular fantasy sports games format. However, instead of sports and players, the player must select his/her line up of movies to play at their own theater box office. Up to 8 movies can be chosen using a game currency budget. Scores are based on real-world box office performances. Players play in leagues against friends, or the wider game network.
The game was conceived by a team in Los Angeles, and they approached O’KellyDesign to help with the overall user experience, and visual design. Fantasy sports games tend to attract a largely male audience, but they wanted this game to also appeal to women, and to a wider range of ages and backgrounds.
To help create an immersive game experience, I drew on the classic real-world cinema experience. There are still many beautiful old cinemas in the US, and that art-deco glamour defines cinema magic for many. There are many graphic references to this time thoughout the games design, albeit in an updated fashion. The games colour palette is based on colour schemes from ‘20s and ‘30s movie posters, but updated to suit contemporary tastes, and the requirements of screen usage.
Real movie posters, stills and images are used liberally across the game to draw the player into their box office, and to offset the coldness of the large amount of stats and data to be found. The typeface is Futura, a perfect fit for its geometric and open/inviting letterforms, and its long-standing big-screen pedigree.
The game has recently launched and is already proving popular. Create your own awesome box office at fantasymovieleague.com.
